According to a recent news article from AL.com, Birmingham police arrested a 50-year-old defendant in connection with a reported homicide at a local motel. Victim was a 45-year-old woman who was strangled to death. Police found victim lying unresponsive in the rented room, according to a spokesperson.
Hotel workers discovered victim’s body while cleaning the room around 11 a.m. They immediately called police and EMS workers pronounced her dead on scene. Police say victim and defendant knew each other, but were not in a romantic relationship. Police have not released any motive or further details about this alleged offense, but it is being reported defendant who is currently being held on $75,000 cash bond was familiar to police and prosecutors.
Defendant allegedly was also charged with a 2008 murder. He was accused of robbing two victims along with help from two accomplices. One victim was killed during the alleged robbery. This crime involved the three men allegedly having a woman attract victims’ attention so they could rob them.
All three defendants were charged with capital murder and armed robbery in connection with this alleged crime. One of his accomplices was convicted of capital murder, but murder charges against defendant were dropped. He was apparently convicted on the robbery and served three years of his 20-year sentence.
Prosecutors say at the time of the most recent offense, defendant was awaiting trial for a 2014 alleged robbery. In yet another incident, he as accused of stealing a car, and this case is still pending as well. His criminal record, the author of this news article reports, contains past convictions for burglary, rape, and receiving stolen property.
Family members of victim have no idea why she was murdered, and said she did not deserve to die. This is the third homicide so far in 2015 according to Birmingham police. It should be noted police have not stated why they believe defendant was involved in this alleged homicide.
One family member said he spoke with victim on the day of her murder and she said she was going to a meeting and would call him after that. He said he never received this phone call from victim, and this was the last time he had seen her alive.
